Two worlds

A hundred-year-old timber door and a modern commercial entry rarely need the same answer.

03The lock, explained

Security starts at the door.

A stylised cross-section of a typical door lock. Select a component to see what it does. Not every lock uses this exact internal design, but the principles hold.

Cylinder

The cylinder is the part the key enters, and the part a locksmith most often works on. Changing the cylinder or its internals is what allows a lock to be rekeyed without replacing the whole assembly on the door.

04Scenarios

Access should feel simple.

Six situations that account for most of the calls we take. Pick the one in front of you.

Locked out

The lock is working. You are just on the wrong side of it.

Nothing is broken — the key is inside, lost, or on a keyring somewhere else. The aim is entry with the least possible impact on the door and hardware.

05Access flow

Six stages between a person and a locked door.

When access works, none of this is visible. When it doesn’t, the problem is almost always at one specific stage.

Person

Someone who is meant to get in — a resident, an owner, a staff member, a tenant.

06Self-check

How secure is your entry?

Quick self-check — not a formal security assessment. Four questions, general guidance only. Nothing is submitted or stored.

Entry security self-check questions

01How old are your locks?

02How many people currently have keys?

03Have you recently moved?

04Has a key been lost or copied?

Guidance

0/4

Answer all four questions and we’ll offer some general guidance on whether anything here is worth acting on. This is not a professional security audit.

All FAQs
What does a locksmith do?

A locksmith works on the hardware that controls access to a property or vehicle. In practice that means regaining entry when a lock cannot be operated, repairing mechanisms that have become unreliable, replacing hardware that is no longer suitable, changing which key operates a lock, and advising on the security of entry points.

How do I know if I need a lock repaired or replaced?

It depends on what has failed. A lock that has become stiff, noisy or misaligned is often repairable, and sometimes the door or strike plate is the real problem rather than the lock. Where internal components are worn out, the body is damaged, or the hardware is no longer appropriate for the door, replacement is usually the more sensible option. Diagnosis comes before that decision.

What should I do if I'm locked out?

First check every other entry point and confirm whether a spare key is genuinely available nearby. If you manage the property through an agent or building manager, they may hold access. If not, contact us on 03 7003 2614 and describe the property type, the door, and what the lock is doing so we can talk through the assistance available.

Can a locksmith rekey an existing lock?

In many cases yes. Rekeying alters the internal arrangement of a lock so that it operates with a new key and the previous keys no longer work. It depends on the lock type and its condition, so the existing hardware needs to be assessed first.

What is the difference between rekeying and replacing a lock?

Rekeying keeps the existing lock on the door and changes the key that operates it. Replacement removes the hardware entirely and fits new hardware. Rekeying suits sound locks where the concern is who holds keys; replacement suits worn, damaged or unsuitable hardware, or where you want a different type of lock.
